Our founder, Dr. Gustav Klein, spent years studying medicinal plants and how to turn them into medicines. As a professor, he headed the Plant Physiological Institute at the University of Vienna before he took over the Schönberger plant sap factory in Magstadt.
Prof. Dr. Klein was ideal for the position after authoring the six-volume Handbuch der Pflanzenanalyse or Plant Analysis Manual; his experience in the pharmaceutical industry and as a scientist put him into an ideal position to establish his own company.
Shortly after the war, in 1946, he and his wife founded a pharmaceutical factory in the Black Forest – Dr. Gustav Klein GmbH in Zell am Harmersbach. The new company focused on manufacturing and marketing herbal medicines; the raw materials – medicinal plants – were grown at or collected near the company's location.
Dr. Gustav Klein held medical conference lectures on herbal medicine that attracted much interest while boosting prescriptions for the company's products – a corporate strategy that succeeded; the company continued to develop steadily. Prof. Dr. Klein's wife took on the company's management after his death in 1954.
